Hourly car insurance in South Africa
Cover measured in hours, not months — for a test drive, collecting a car you have just bought, or a single trip across town.
Typical range: R35–R90 for the first hour, with each extra hour priced lower than the first.
When hourly cover makes sense
Hourly policies exist for journeys that a monthly premium cannot justify. The three most common in South Africa are collecting a newly bought vehicle from a dealer or private seller before the annual policy incepts, a test drive on a car that is not yet yours, and moving a family member's vehicle a short distance while they are away.
Because the exposure window is tiny, underwriters price the first hour highest and taper afterwards. If you need more than about six hours, a full day is almost always cheaper than stacking hourly blocks — the wizard compares both automatically.
What is actually covered
Most hourly products on our panel are comprehensive: third-party liability, accident damage, theft and hijack, plus 24/7 roadside assistance for the cover window. The sum insured is the retail or agreed value of the vehicle and the excess is the standard short-term excess, typically R2,500 to R5,000.
Cover starts at the time you nominate, not at the time of payment, so you can buy an hour in the morning for a collection at four in the afternoon.

hourly car insurance FAQs
- Can you insure a car for one hour in South Africa?
- Yes. Several South African underwriters issue motor cover for a minimum term of one hour. It is a standalone policy with its own excess and sum insured, and it is usually active within 15 minutes of payment once the vehicle and licence details are verified.
- How much is 1 hour of car insurance?
- Expect roughly R35 to R90 for the first hour on a standard hatchback or sedan, depending on vehicle value, driver age and where the car is kept. Additional hours are priced lower than the first, and beyond about six hours a full-day policy is usually cheaper.
- Is hourly car insurance comprehensive?
- Most hourly products on our panel are comprehensive — third-party liability, accident damage, theft and hijack, and roadside assistance. Third-party-only hourly cover exists and is cheaper, but it pays nothing toward damage to the car you are driving.
- Can I buy hourly cover for a car I am collecting from a dealer?
- Yes, and it is one of the most common uses. You need the VIN or registration number, the retail value, and your licence details. Cover can be set to start at the collection time rather than the moment you pay.
- Does an hourly claim affect my annual policy?
- No. A short-term policy is a separate contract with its own claims history, so a claim on it does not reset the no-claim bonus on any annual policy you hold elsewhere.
- How quickly does hourly cover activate?
- Most partners activate within 5 to 15 minutes of payment. You receive the schedule and policy number by WhatsApp and email before you drive.

Single-day and multi-day cover for errands, deliveries, licence tests and cars sitting between annual policies.
Standalone cover in your name when you drive a friend's or family member's car — their no-claim bonus stays untouched.
