Daily car insurance in South Africa
Single-day and multi-day cover for errands, deliveries, licence tests and cars sitting between annual policies.
Typical range: R60–R220 per day for comprehensive cover on a mid-range vehicle.
How daily premiums are calculated
A day rate is the annual risk premium compressed into 24 hours plus a fixed administration loading, which is why one day of cover costs far more than one three-hundred-and-sixty-fifth of an annual policy. The inputs are the same: vehicle value, driver age and licence tenure, overnight parking postcode, and whether use is private or commercial.
Day rates fall quickly as you add days. Seven consecutive days typically costs three to four times a single day rather than seven times, so if your plans are uncertain it is usually worth buying the longer block up front.
Common South African use cases
Drivers most often buy a day of cover for a licence test in a family member's car, a once-off furniture or delivery run, driving a company pool vehicle over a weekend, or keeping a car insured for the single day it moves between two owners.
If your car sits unused for long stretches, day cover bought only on the days you actually drive can work out cheaper than an annual policy — provided the vehicle is not financed, since most finance agreements require continuous comprehensive cover.

daily car insurance FAQs
- How much does daily car insurance cost in South Africa?
- Comprehensive daily cover typically ranges from about R60 to R220 a day. A small hatchback parked in a locked garage sits at the bottom of that band; a high-value SUV in a Johannesburg hijacking hotspot sits at the top.
- Can I insure a car for just one day?
- Yes. One-day comprehensive policies are issued by several South African underwriters and activate the same day, usually within 15 minutes of payment.
- Is daily insurance cheaper than adding a driver to an annual policy?
- For occasional use, yes. Adding a young or newly licensed driver to an annual policy can raise the premium for the full year, while a day policy prices only the day in question and leaves the annual contract untouched.
- Does daily cover include roadside assistance?
- Most comprehensive daily products include 24/7 roadside assistance, towing and a call-out for flat batteries or tyres for the duration of the policy. Third-party-only day cover generally does not.
- Can I extend a one-day policy?
- Yes, most partners let you extend before the policy expires, and the extension is priced at the lower multi-day rate. Extending after expiry means a new policy and a new administration fee.
- Do I need my own licence history for daily cover?
- You need a valid South African or accepted international licence and must disclose claims and rejections from the past three to five years. Undisclosed history is the most common reason a short-term claim is repudiated.
